Harmony Cellars 2005 Merlot

Four months ago I wrote my first wine tasting notes and while I have tried a few wines between then and now, this is my 2nd attempt at proper tasting and thoughts.

This wine had a very alocholy smell. The fumes were very strong, especially on the first sniff. My initial taste seemed very alcoholy as well. Most of the wines, especially red, I have had are very mellow and smooth when they first hit the tongue, but once they the back of the tongue and I swallow, it gets very tart. What surprised me was that this wine was the opposite. It was very tart and sour at first and as it moved across my tongue became more mellow and was very smooth going down.

I am still not very good at tasting or the smells. I feel like there's always that taste right on the tip of your tongue, no pun intended, but I can never quite figure out what the hell it is. Though, Merc did bring to my attention that I don't like anything and haven't tasted much in my life, which is probably why my wine tasting skills are horrible. I hate to admit it, but he is probably right...but I digress.

I didn't really get any unique smells out of this wine. I guess smells like wine wouldn't count, huh? I did get a few tastes though. I got a lingering taste of marshmellow...not roasted or charred, but more like a Peep. Sweet, yet artificial. Shortly after that taste emerged, I got an orangey flavor...apparently what I tasted was the pith of an orange. There was a hint of cherry and towards the end of my wine, I seemed to taste red sauce and an almost olive flavor. But then again, maybe it was just Ong's lasagna lingering a little bit.

I really did like this wine. It was relatively easy for me to drink and I found myself wanting more, which doesn't really happen with me and wine. Oh, and another thing I learned...apparently, wine has legs. I had no idea.
